Book Blogger Hop: 7/29-8/1

Book Blogger HopEvery Friday, Jennifer from Crazy For Books sets up the Book Blogger Hop. It’s “a place just for book bloggers and readers to connect and share our love of the written word!”

This week’s question is: “Highlight one book you have received this week (for review, from the library, purchased at the store, etc.) that you can’t wait to dig into!”

Well, I’ve gotten plenty of great books this week in the mail and from the library, but I think the one I want to highlight is the audio book I started listening to last night which is…

Mind's Eye by Håkan NesserMind’s Eye by Håkan Nesser is from HighBridge Audio and I got it from my library.  Apparently but unsurprisingly, the books were not originally translated or released in order here in the states. All the same, Mind’s Eye is the first book in the Inspector Van Veeteran series.

Here is the summary: Chief Inspector Van Veeteren knew that murder cases were never as open-and-shut as this one: Janek Mitter woke one morning with a brutal hangover and discovered his wife of three months lying facedown in the bathtub, dead. With only the flimsiest excuse as his defense, he is found guilty of a drunken crime of passion and imprisoned in a mental institution.

But Van Veeteren’s suspicions about the identity of the killer are borne out when Mitter also becomes a murder victim. Now the chief inspector launches a full-scale investigation of the two slayings. But it may only be the unspoken secrets of the dead–revealed in a mysterious letter that Mitter wrote shortly before his death–that will finally allow Van Veeteren to unmask the killer and expose the shocking root of this sordid violence.

Simon Vance is the novel’s narrator, and I like that he really makes each voice distinctive. And although we’ve only just met, I already love Van Veeteran’s sense of humor and his sarcasm.

What awesome book did you get this week? Feel free to comment and link me to your post! As for the other awesome books I got this week, check back on Sunday when I post another exciting installment of Highlights from the Book Horde.

About April

I'm a librarian, reader, and writer whose main goal in life is to be able to swim in books the way Scrooge McDuck swims in money. Although my reading choices will always be wildly eclectic and I never plan on leaving any genre unexplored, my favorite reads tend to be Fantasy, Young Adult, Science Fiction, Gay Romance, or Historical Fiction. 7. Hey, there. Returning the hop! It’s interesting that these were not released here in order (though, as you said, not surprising). I’ve actually had book 3 for quite some time now but haven’t read it. Shame on me.

Taking a quick hop on through the blog hop. I’m not going to lie, I’m not big on mysteries. But I love your blog.

    New Follower by the way!

    • Thanks for hopping by and following! I’ll go check out your blog asap.

I know what you mean about mysteries. I can’t seem to get through most of them unless they’re Nordic. And I go through weird book phases and I never know how long they will last, which can be fun but gets annoying.

  13. Stopped by from the Hop. I love your header, really creative. Since I’ve been getting most of my reads from independent authors lately & that’s where my highlighted book comes from. I’ve never tried an audio book, not sure why. Your pick sounds like a good book though, I’ll have to check it out. Here’s my link http://creativedeeds.wordpress.com/2011/07/30/book-blogger-hop-729-81/#comment-51 – The book is An Apple for Zoe by Thomas Amo.

    • Thanks so much! I’m a very reluctant audio book reader myself, but in the summer I find it helpful in terms of distracting me from the heat. Especially when I’m driving. 🙂

      • Here’s the link for the review of An Apple for Zoe.

I’ll do a post of the review as soon as I finish my current read. I usually put them up a couple at a time. I tend to read them so fast don’t want to overwhelm everyone! Thanks for stopping by my blog.
There are other reviews on that page as well. Eventually I’ll make each review a separate post. I didn’t honestly think that I would have that many reviews up, but as it turns out it has become a new addiction. 🙂

  14. Pussreboots says:

I’ve posted a picture of an adorable baby pickle. It’s an illustration from the book I’m highlighting. Please come see what book I’m reading!

  15. Oh, I like well written sarcasm! Creepy cover too.
